2012

There haven’t been many updates, but there are some things on the way. We will release a cool pack of zines/book soon along with a few apparel items. Also, in a few days I shall leave here some cool photos of my trip to Berlin to attend Bread & Butter and Bright, two amazing trade shows. For now, these are some old and random photos.

Sun, West Coast and Bubba Gump? I would want that right now!

I had so many of these snacks in Japan. Mint ice cream and that amazing bottled tea.

I painted this beast for a friend of mine, I’m proud of it.

The best.

A staple of streetwear shops, the bench.

Boom.

One big room, full of good Rothkos.

Retna in Pasadena.

Oh to be young.

Got to make more of these, as they have been posted in cities for more than a year and they still hold up in good condition.

On the wall.

Found this Neckface in Tokyo.

I love writing in notebooks.

The Mojave desert.

Louisiana.

Eight years ago I was into Kaws, flannels and apparently into stealing road signs.

I once photographed Josh Kalis.

You know what’s the worst? None of these works. You know what’s the best? My girlfriend gave me a 3DS Ocarina of Time Edition.

The Avenger is getting dropped, but the next Ellington shoe still has the same sole. This Jordan colourway is too good.

This is a sample of the things I was given in Berlin and that I brought back.

This is what I left there because I had no space in my bag. I didn’t have to pay for any of it, so it’s cool.

A Philippine woman that said ‘bon apetit’ suggested that I drink a yoghurt drink with mango, it was so good. The rest was not bad either.

NBA team hats by New Era coming next season. How have I seen this? The upcoming post will tell you.

I love airports.

Air Max as a door knob? Want.

In Berlin I was chauffeured to the Supra showroom that was isolated from the fairs. They definitely know how to treat people right, and the next releases are awesome.

Antwuan is out of the the team though, no shoe until he comes back from jail. I’m still rocking these though.

To keep it on the same topic, I gave these to my girlfriend. Googly eyes.

I love cycling this fixed gear. I might be writing about bikes soon.

I am saying this without confirming, but I believe this is from the Chapman Brothers. I find it repulsive/appealing.

I love the aesthetic of this. And there are a million of reasons why I love you, this is just another one.

I’m upset looking at this photo. This used to be my favourite Chinese place, but now it changed ownership. Two minutes from my house, every time I went in I always asked for ‘Thai red curry with chicken’, it always came out amazing. Now they don’t even have that on the menu. But the view to the Emirates Stadium is still there.

Every single day I wake up to starts with Chinese football and breakfast in bed. Just kidding.

The best about this picture is that the mask on the left is actually in my living room now!

Heath Kirchart was so happy to see me that day!

I occasionally do this.

And this.

And this too.

Back To Normal

Sorry for the lack of these updates that seem to please people, but I was without a camera. Basically some things I did today.

You miss the strangest things from home. Early, as you can check on the watch, and I downed two of these. Yumm.

Mail some orders. Keep it coming, order from www.organicanagram.com

I was ten years younger when I did this. Stupid, I know, but in a decade they managed to flip it upside down, rather than finish the construction job.

I will not say anything.

All in the details.

Sick, sick. Sometimes we take these things for granted, but I sure do pay attention.

Quick jump to the skateshop for a chat.

Oh.

Alife and Project X? New York to the fullest!

Such simple things can mean the most.

I still have to sit down and watch the Real Since Day One DVD. Excited for it. Coarse is sick, and when I got these Nikes for 30$, I knew they would be my Winter favourites. And so they became.

Portugal in the Euros, ballin’!

Don’t forget to check our Tumblr and follow!

As The Seasons Change

As the next deadline that I have to meet is in January and I’ve been making a steady progress on that, I’ve been using my free time to see every single blog entry from a popular street blog since 2006. Despite being really entertaining and giving you a good perspective on how things progress, it also shows a dismal scene. Here I had already talked about how much of the London scene had changed since I got my first contact with it. By looking at these posts dated from 2007 and clicking on the links, you realize how all these companies and shops have disappeared. The big players have changed hands and it really is a difficult time for us now. I feel it myself as I have to be a more conscious buyer, as I do not have as much money as I used to have, and I have different priorities now. You see sites like Plndr.com being stacked with entire collections of big brands like Married To The Mob or Crooks and Castles at 80% their retail price and with free shipping. Brands can sell some of their stock and make a minimum profit that allows to pay some bills, like we do here at the Industries, but if I had to pay rent for a single week based on the sales that we make, I would be homeless within two weeks. I would not be able to keep a store open by paying store rent, paying employers and paying my own rent. And this is a Eastern World phenomenon, as brands with 3 or 4 stores worldwide cannot pay their employers, let alone buy new stock. That is why it is more important than ever to support those that are closer to you. DC Shoes is owned by the Quicksilver group, and they had to close their Los Angeles store, right on Melrose. If DC cannot keep a store open in an old Jewish neighbourhood because it is not profitable, you have to wonder how it is for the rest of the players out there. I guess we should all be more responsible now and buy less, be more selective. I feel it in my personal life, and it makes you be more creative. Me and my girlfriend sometimes wonder how amazing it is that we get to witness so much natural beauty out there without paying a single dime, because there are things that money cannot buy. That is why we try to offer really good products at a good price for our clients. I want to thank you for sticking with us through this depressing economic times, but hopefully we will have live to see a more prosper era, where we can all share the riches that are abundant in this world.

On with our news. We still haven’t released the latest newsletter about the watches that came and sold out. We still have some tote bags available at www.organicanagram.com, they are of great quality, amazing print and large handles. We were going to make some new grey beanies, but the factory closed, so I guess that will not go forward. But not all is bad! We are waiting to receive new zippers in grey and two new skateboard decks are being designed.

Meanwhile, follow us on Tumblr for sneak peaks of products and random inspiration. http://organicanagram.tumblr.com/

More Phone Photos

Last time I did this, people enjoyed it, so here are some more photos from my mobile phone taken during the last three months. I have mainly been trying to spend time with my friends withouth going too far away.

The illustrator James Jarvis had a small exhibition in a gallery and I used the chance to get one of his drawings.

This is one of my favourite views from London. I frequently go to Greenwhich when the weather is good, and I love Cannary Wharf at night.

Disney!

This was at an amazing bookstore at the far end of Hollywood Blvd., great selection of books and toys.

I had never eaten this candy before, but it is so good. Chocolate on the outside combined with a sticky strawberry chew on the inside. Yummi!

Retna had an exhibition in a warehouse in London that was terribly publicized and despite the location being good inside, it’s in a alley nobody would notice. I loved it, of course, as I could be there alone with the paintings.

Hmm…

A bit more Retna just to ease the awkwardness.

I love cities in the early hours when everybody is asleep. This was in Shoreditch around 5am before I had to go to the airport, I went for a bike ride and to drop a thing at a friends’ house.

Back in my hometown, this guy kept us entertained for a while. Notice the medal, WINNING at life.

I helped my friend to pick this car up from the garage. I don’t know anything about cars, but I know what is good looking, and this seems to fit it.

A street party one hour away.

This is the D. Luís I bridge in Oporto, engineered by a partner of Gustave Eiffel, who has another bridge nearby.

In the same night, I made the same occasion being celebrated in my hometown and the spirits were high.

Two of my friends were going to Africa for two months and the dinner that also coincided with a birthday was held at this building that I never had the chance to go inside.

I used to take this short cut when I was younger to meet the kids from the neighbourhood next to mine, and I still like going there sometimes.

Cinema at 11am? I had never been to a movie premiere and Cars 2 was a good start.

Back in Lisbon for dinner.

Eh.

Spent a lot of hours driving.

Kids going crazy over merch.

I don’t listen to OFWGKTA, but their live show is pretty cool.

I was passing through Hideout the next day and this queue was there to meet them. I felt old.

I have a small dinghy boat that I take to this lake. This mannequin is at the bottom of it, creepy.

That lake is one of those places I feel peaceful and it’s fun to take my friends there.

I nearly died this day. I cycled 120km from my house until the end of this cycle path, the problem is that I didn’t carry any water, and the return journey is a 40km hill. But I did it and my stickers prove it.

Me and my friends were constructing this skate ramp, good times.

I started and finished Super Mario World 2 in a day.

I hate skating bad spots, so due to the lack of good ones in my hometown, I go cruise around on my own when the streets are empty.

This photo makes me sad and is a sign of the times. Me and my friends used to go to this shopping centre and just chill, this is the cave and all the shops are empty. Not a single business survived there with the new shopping centres that have opened. Not that this place was great, but the memories will be difficult to remember as the soul of this has been taken out of it.

I was on the road with my father and we went to this joint, so simple yet so good.

We went to the South of Portugal.

This is also in Algarve.

Back into the higher lands, quick stop on the road.

This was probably the worst summer party I have ever seen and that was from the inside of a car. Yet, it represents some of my best memories from this Summer.

We to the north of Spain to meet some friends at a festival. That is Meshuggah, still so good.

On the way back, we saw this cow on the side of the road. I have been saying that I’m going to ride the first animal I see on the side of the road, and on this occasion at 4am, I was going to do it, but the cow ran away really fast. I’m not giving up yet.

I drive at stupid hours and I should stop doing it.

I remember this was a very good Sunday. After some events, I came to this field where I used to play football to chill out for a while.

More driving, for long hours. This is the monastery in Alcobaça, very very pretty.

I took this photo because this was mind-fucking me, but the rest of the Pedro Cabrita Reis retrospective was actually interesting.

The monastery of Jerónimos is the most important in Portugal and also gorgeous.

This is the main church, where our most famous poet’s ashes are, Luis Vaz de Camões’.

This is as random as it gets, but my mum made it for me and it was a nice gesture!

Me and Joana went to a festival that involved more driving, nice weather and good company.

Depending on which country you are, eating snails might be a great thing or a disgusting idea. Me and my family enjoy it in the Summer.

Arsenal played a local team in a friendly match, so I went to the stadium, fun times.

By chance, we went to dinner on a Sunday night at this seaside town that attracts a lot of tourists and they were holding some kind of sailing competition that seemed really boring.

Speaking about dinner for two…

Ice creams by the beach.

This new restaurant called Darwin was booked by my parents and the place was awesome, well decorated and with great views, matched with unpretentious food.

A few days later, me and some friends went to Vigo in Spain for a skate competition and an outdoor festival. Unfortunately the raining condemned the skateboarding to an early finish, but the rest was a messy afair. Nice dinner and lovely to hang out with everyone during the night.

During the day things were calm, but about 14 foreigners in a town as cool as Vigo meant a healthy combination of fun and trouble.

Back in my hometown everybody is on holidays, so we have just been chilling, swimming, playing football and hanging out at night. I don’t drink alcohol, but they sure make up for it.

Hmm.

Hmm.

This has been at my door since my family moved here. Despite everything, my family is still together and I’m proud of that. I am the little guy in the middle, I guess 18 years pass really fast. And now you know my surname too.

This was taken at 7am and in a way I guess it’s a good way to contradict the chaos that has surrounded the last weekend, which seemed to last a week. Summer is coming to an end, but this has been an eventful one that I will always remember.

New Beginings

I don’t really like to write about myself or the people that surround me. Not because I don’t think my life is interesting (I’m very pleased to say that I do a lot of cool things), but because I don’t feel like exploring my own self out there, as you never know who is reading you on the other side. If this seems too analytical, then forgive me this time. I have come to the end of a road in these last months. Unfortunately, due to the recent economic state, you can’t really take any highway, so even though I’ve surpassed the dreams I’ve had as a kid, I have to keep moving forward. I finished university earlier than my friends, so now that a lot of people are finishing their degrees and moving on with their lives, it feels like we are all changing. New goals, breaks in the routine, new relationships, some of our family members dying, among other things. While we’ve always survived whatever was thrown in our way, adulthood is not a distant sight anymore, it is a reality and I feel like I got to be even more responsible than we are. I really take a lot of time to check how my friends are and I make an extra effort to show my family that I appreciate them, putting all my projects on hold. We are all a bit egoistic, and even though I am one of those that always shares, deep down in my heart, there are things that only I feel and that I cannot trust anyone, because it is part of my internal search. I am not sure of my point with this, but I appreciate everybody that talks to me about our brand, and my own interests, at the same time, I am in an amazing situation in my life in terms of relating to different people that were either forgotten or once incompatible. Despite all the despicable things that populate our word, that are still things that make our life amazing, experiences that are meant to be shared, feeling loved, changing a glance that means everything.

Regarding the brand, a lot of things are coming. New prints just waiting to be put out, new t-shirts, a new website, tote bags, among a lot of other sick things. Plus, I have been playing with the idea of taking over a shop for 2 or 3 days with a pop up Organic Anagram Industries space. If you have a shop or know anyone that would be open to receive us, please contact me through the website and we will work a deal that makes everyone happy.

Not related to anything, just a pair of slip ons I customized a few years ago.

New Print / Old Interview

Hi everyone!

I guess you already know we released a new print called Night Creature by Braulio Amado. He is a great guy, a talented artist, and the print is really sick, you can even hang it in two ways. Creativity + good dudes, all that we are about here at the Industries. You can go to our page to buy it, it is really cheap, hand-numbered and will be delivered directly to your door!

We are working a lot of cool things for the next months, but for now I will leave this old, unpublished interview here.

First of all, what is OA, what motivated you to start it, and what sets you apart from everyone else?

I have a lot of friends that are into the same things as myself, but they lack the motivation or ambition to be able to find an idea that they want to explore and develop it until the end. I have always been a loyal person and I’d rather much be a team-player than someone leading everything, but in this case, I had to do it myself, even though I’d rather be surrounded by even more people to run a company like this. Maybe it’s better, as there are no differences and egos to please!
We do not release products according to seasons, and while there are a variety of different companies (that last for a few t-shirts) independently printed, what sets us apart is the quality. Even though our products are limited editions, most of the things come with our own label and obey to a very high standard. It makes it much more difficult to produce, but we can only release what we are pleased with and that we can’t find out there.

I can see you have a pretty impressive  DIY ethic behind the project, what are the best aspects about working for yourself, are there any downsides?

Yes, it is pretty satisfying. The best is that we only do what we want, and we have not many financial worries, because our products come usually in small quantities, so even if something takes a while to sell out, we can always get the money from another release. The downside is connected to that. We have to be self-sustainable, so for example, to collaborate with certain artists is out of the way because we are only interested in releasing 10 prints of each work. Some people need to pay bills so they are not eager to work like that. For factories it is also a problem, imagine if we wanted to produce a shirt or a shoe (which we have tried already). A factory replies that they would be very pleased but they can only produce 1000 pairs.
But like I said, this is our approach and we are going to stick to it. I would love to collaborate with more independent and larger companies, but as they are all losing money and the product is not shipping, people become less keen to interact and experiment.

How important do you think having this kind of ethic is to your business and to any small business?

All the money that we make is to cover the costs like production, shipping and some artist fees that might exist. For the OA Industries I would very much prefer to do something for a small group of people and sell everything, giving a few people a quality product, rather than doing 5000 t-shirts of the same design, take loans to open a shop, and in one year, everything has to close down because we were unable to sell everything. It is not ideal, I simply believe this is the best approach and it keeps us focused and seeing the company in a very positive light, rather than a source of income which we had to be dependent from.
I think that in the 90s in streetwear and skateboard, you saw a lot of people that took the route of internet start-ups, meaning that they started a company, developed it, and tried to sell it for maximum profit. That doesn’t seem to happen nowadays, so small businesses are more isolated than ever. In many cases, we are competing with larger labels, because people will want a specific product. What I mean is that while 10 years ago you’d go and buy a t-shirt from a brand you liked and wanted to support, nowadays customers are much more conscious and they don’t want any t-shirt, they have certain expectations that have to be met and as the customers become more informed, they know what they want specifically.

Finally, What’s can we expect from OA in 2011?

This year has been amazing already. I worked closely with Marie Err who designed a skateboard for us. I’ve always had a dream of putting a skate deck out there and the quality of the illustration, the construction of the deck itself, the aim of releasing such a good product that you can skate and also put in a wall, symbolizes everything I’ve wished for when I started the Organic Anagram Industries. We released three t-shirts dedicated to Stanley Kubrick movies that are super heavy and with great quality, with our own label, and just this week we have released a new book, Slaughter/Memória, which has two short-stories and some photos, and comes hand-numbered. As you can see, all very varied and cool! I believe that until the end of the year we are going to see two or three more prints, maybe some vinyl or wood toys and new pieces of clothing.

Going Back To Cali Cali

A few weeks ago I went back to California and Nevada, these are some photos that I took. I had to make them really small, so my apologies for that, but you can have an idea. If anybody wants the photos with a good resolution, let me know.

As soon as we arrived at LAX we got our car for the next eleven days, a little white warrior. We drove around LA for a few hours then we drove up to Malibu to take some sleep. Our destination was up the coast in San Francisco, so it was a fun drive. I’ve been to SF like 4 times and I had already driven around California, so it was more about relaxing rather than discovering anything new.

When I am away from home, I love waking up early. I would like to to that when I’m at my house, but it’s difficult sometimes.

And up the coast we go.

We stopped at 7am in Santa Barbara. Joana is wearing our crewneck.

After a short nap, time for a dip into this market.

… where we bought this pomegranate juice. Pomegranate is one of my favourite fruits. You break the bits off, add a little sugar and you have got yourself a bit of heaven in your mouth, that is fun to eat.

William Randolph Hearst is one of the few people that I admire. His life was insane and he was a solid dude. The houses that he built in San Simeon, where his father explored mines during his youth, are some of the most impressive things I have ever seen.

Just the view to the ocean that he had from his lands.

His little Neptune pool.

What is yellow, it is actually gold.

Blaow.

He also had an inside swimming pool that is the most marvellous thing I’ve seen.

We left late, so we had to drive up the coast, and to our surprise, the road was closed. We had to make a quick diversion to head north.

There are not many cities in Central California, but I love to drive, and the fruit fields and wineries are an interesting landscape.

We slept in King City and the next day we arrived in Monterrey. Nice place, I went there the first time I ever went to SF, and it was also good to walk around.

We arrived in San Francisco and I realized there was a Giants game later in the afternoon, so I promptly bought tickets.

The stadium is really pretty and next to the water.

It’s not up to me to comment on a game I do not understand, but I’ll stick with football. This was supposed to be a local rivalry match against the Oakland Athletics and everybody was just standing up and walking around without paying attention to the game.

Let’s go Giants.

San Francisco is one of my favourite cities on earth. If it was closer to my hometown I would definitely move there. As we were checking different places and shops, I did not take a lot of photos.

Woah.

Mike Giant on the left.

Pier 39. We went there the night before, leaving the car at the hotel and taking the tram, but it was closed for a private event. Fail.

Eat that shrimp e-e-e-e-at that shrimp.

After three days in San Francisco, it was time to drive down to Las Vegas. Last time we got out through Yosemite National Park and I drove 6 hours straight in a single road. This time we took a different route through Bakersfield and the Mojave desert.

The scenery was great.

Rearview mirror.

Bazzillion wind-things.

And as the night falls, the desert.

Another day, another piece of land to conquer.

*eurgh!*

No, seriously.

I really enjoy driving in the desert.

Once we got to Vegas, three days of eating, swimming and being lazy.

Then we drove back to Los Angeles, passing through Pasadena where there was a small and nice exhibition. Cház and Retna here.

Retna and the museum.

Back in LA, a lot of driving to do. I regret not taking pictures of the place where we slept.

A room full of Rothko’s.

I see what you did there.

Roscoe’s! Chicken and waffles!

We went to this charity event only to be surprised by more pro skaters than people in attendance.  That is just the legend Heath Kirchart smiling.

It was organized by Skateboarder Mag. And that is Jimmy Carlin.

Timecode voice: Josh Kalis.

A lot of people. Eric Koston, Theotis Beasley, David Gonzalez, Chico Brenes, Rodrigo TX, Mike Carroll, Brandon Biebel, Kelly Hart, Ishod Wair, Luan Oliveira, Dustin Dollin, Sierra Fellers, Chico Brenes and loads of other guys.

Art In The Streets was a mindblowing exhibition.

RIP Rammellzee.

We went to this great bookstore/toyshop on the last day, before going back to Venice Beach and the airport, great selection of products.

And a bit of El Mac and Retna to round it off. Obviously the best memories cannot be captured in photos and there are a lot of places that I did not take the camera, but this should give you an idea. Have a good Summer, and we will have some surprises soon!

Mobile Phone Photos

This time I’m going to put some photos here that were taken with my phone, so the quality is not that good. Hope you enjoy.

This is one of my favourite paintings at the Tate Modern, by Roberto Matta.

Definition of bomb! I could eat it by myself, but who would say no to this kind of help?

I just thought that these two friends playing at the National Theatre lobby looked really dope.

The young Allen Ginsberg was so stylish.

Williams S. Burroughs was not that bad either.

I love Ikea meatballs. I know it’s a stupid thing to like, but what can you do. Tip: you pay £4.50 for 15 meatballs, but if you walk downstairs and fill the Ikea Family Card thing with false details, you get a plastic card that allows you to pay £1.50 for 10 meatballs. So if you ask for 2 x 10 meatballs, you pay £3 and you get 20 meatballs plus double the side plates with chips and gravy. I should be the minister of the economy.

Remember when I said I liked the painting by Roberto Matta? This is by his son who died really young, and rather than being at the Tate, it belongs to me. Good deal.

I love the architecture of the Barbican.

Inside they had this installation with bowling games from different gaming systems.

This place means a lot to me.

Hmm.

Love the colours.

But I also love airports. Such a great feeling.

London might be a fucked up place to be during the Winter, but when the sun comes out, nothing comes close.

This Richard Wilson installation at the Saatchi Gallery is so beautiful to see in person.

You might have heard about a project called Slaughter/Memória. When the books came in, I got some help unpacking!

There is a clock like this near my house, this one is like 15 minutes away, pretty!

Alexandra Palace has great views of London.

This is 10 minutes away from my house and is beautiful, however a bit creepy. If you walk on the bridge, there a lot of flowers there, since it is so high, a lot of people kill themselves there.

Shaolin ninjas!

Chrome Black is a very nice store.

I’m all for destruction.

Yes, we have these things in London.

And moving bridges too. It is funny to see this moving so boats can pass.

Greenwhich is one of my favourite places in the Summer.

Obey sale, I can deal with that.

Cuteness. MOSH.

The Book Fair in Lisbon is always a good way to start the Summer, but it is always so hot.

I don’t even like Odd Future that much, but I respect their hustle (even though Tyler is clearly going to fry). The reason why these murals have been appearing all over London (and they get so much publicity) is because the same people that managed Eminem and 50 Cent are now taking care of them. Can’t hate though!

Until the next time!

And So Comes May

A while ago I talked about putting stickers on used skateboards. I did another one.

Sometimes I paint and do some things related to art. Not that I am an artist, but I have fun doing things like this. Maybe I’ll open a section in the website dedicated to these things I do.

I had no idea this would take so long, but I have since completed another in an equally big size.

And this might seem very simple, but it means a lot to me as it is a reference to one of the masters of my dissertation. The geometric style and the three primary colours have a strong effect on me, so I dig this.

Ha!

Another thing I had mentioned before were crystals.

I haven’t done many lately because I have been travelling and it’s hot, but I’m getting better.

Sweet.

In terms of good news, our latest release is out, Slaughter/Memória. It contains two short stories and some photos and you can check more about it on our website. The newsletter will be sent soon with these news, as I have been super busy selling copies to close friends first, but there are enough for everyone, it’s just a matter of approaching different targets in different times. Not that you need to know about it or care, but I am feeling too talkative so I will shut up for now.
